Question

Can I "block" a section header account so it cannot be posted to, and you can only post to the subaccounts?

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. I can see how having the flexibility to post to sub-accounts without it showing to the header account would be handy for your business.

At this time, QuickBooks Online does not include this feature. Header accounts are set up as parent accounts in the system and inactivating or blocking a parent account would also inactive all its sub-accounts. They really always go hand in hand in the system. Apart from using parent and sub-accounts in QuickBooks Online to organize your books, you could also use account numbers. This could enable every sub-account to exist as parent accounts but having a numbering system to differentiate a parent header account from a parent sub-account. To learn more on this alternative, here's a useful article: Use account numbers in your chart of accounts

If you'd benefit from additional options in managing chart of accounts, feel free to submit feedback directly to our engineers. Your comments are crucial in driving innovation to offer the best QuickBooks experience we can.

Have a good one.

It does seem that there should be a way to block a header account from being used for transactions. Not everyone wants to use account numbers.

Hi there Vicki74,

I can see that being able to block a parent account's use directly in transactions is a feature that you'd like to see to make sure your transactions are entered correctly. I recommend leaving Feeback in the system by clicking on the Gear icon, then Feedback. The comments made in that section are taken into consideration by our developers when designing new features for QuickBooks Online.
