Question

Credit card refund split to two customers

One of the credit cards was used to refund items to two different customers. Using the "Split" tab the customer option doesn't appear as it does for a charge. Does this require setting up in the QBO settings?

Hi there WendyLM,

It's important that all your transactions are entered correctly for your books to be well balanced. QuickBooks Online is a great tool able to help you keep track of sales and expenses so your books can be well balanced. I can provide some information about customer refunds.

Within QuickBooks Online, a single refund receipt can't be split and attributed to two different customers in the same transaction. What can be done here however would be to use the Undeposited funds account. The first step would be to create two refund receipts manually, one for each customer. Enter the details of what you're refunding and the respective total for the customer, then for the payment account, select undeposited funds. Then, once completed, instead of using a normal deposit that you would use to deposit sales transactions and can't be used for outgoing transactions, you could go to the banking tab and do a transfer from the bank account to undeposited funds. In the memo of the transaction, you can include details that this was to refund customers A and B.
