Question

Entering historical QB Desktop data in QBO

We made the decision to move from QuickBooks Desktop (Premier Nonprofit Edition) (being abbreviated to QBD) to QuickBooks online (QBO) to gain some efficiencies with app integration and so on.

The problem is, we had been using desktop since the inception of our organization and the data migration available to QBO is miniscule, so none of my historical data is available in QBO.  This causes issues with a myriad of things, including reporting.  I'm wondering if anyone has found a way to enter historical balances into QBO, such as month-end account balances by class.

Once I made the conversion, I wanted to cancel our desktop subscription, thinking I could still access all my historical data I just wouldn't get any updates and wouldn't use the payroll function in QBD any longer.  HOWEVER, when I contacted Intuit, I was told that if I cancelled our QBD subscription I would no longer have access to my historical data!  To me, that is completely unacceptable!  For a multitude of reasons we need to have access to historical data, including the fact that QBO doesn't support the full conversion from QBD to QBO.  Has anyone found a work around for this.  I still reference my QBD data daily!  And will need to for reporting purposes and if we ever need to find historical information for multiple reasons (tax audit for one!).

Thanks!

Hi Finances2015.

Transferring your data from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online is a quick process when using the dataswitcher program. I'd be happy to help you with getting your historical data transferred over.

If you haven't moved the data over to QuickBooks Online yet you can use our data switcher program which moves your information over for the last two years for free. You can increase it past the two year mark for a charge of $70 a year.

If you have already imported your information over you'll need to import some of the information into your QuickBooks online account. I recommend going over this article that explains what you can import and has links to articles on how to import. Any information not showing in that article you'll need to enter manually.

You can also look into third party apps that can import your information by going to our App screen. You can get there by clicking Apps on the left hand menu in QuickBooks Online.

If you have any questions let us know and we'd be happy to help.

I wish I had known about the data switcher program before I did the migration (there was no mention of it on the Migrating from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online document I referenced).  So now it's too late to use it as I've already done the migration and have been using QBO exclusively for 4-6 weeks now?  Because I would gladly pay the $70 to get ALL my historical data moved over
