Question

How do I connect to my bank account on Quickbooks Desktop?

I'm trying to connect to my bank account but quickbooks keeps telling me to download a bank statement to Quickbooks in order to set up my bank feed.  But when I go to my bank's website, there is no option to download to quickbooks, it just downloads a regular PDF of my statement into my downloads.  I've imported that document into the document section of Quickbooks, but this doesn't seem to have done anything.  Does anyone know how to connect to a Canadian bank account?  Or just tell me what I'm doing wrong?  Thanks!

Hi dairydetippe,

Connecting your bank account to QuickBooks Desktop is a wonderful way to bring your transactions into QuickBooks Desktop and keep your bookkeeping as simple as possible. Don't worry, I'm happy to go over this with you.

At this time, not all banks connect with QuickBooks Desktop, so it'll be a matter of determining if your bank can connect or not.

QuickBooks Desktop uses a system called Web Connect to download your bank feed transactions into the program. For this to work, you're bank needs to offer services for QuickBooks, which you can usually pinpoint as it'll offer a .QBO as a file type. If your bank doesn't have that file type, it won't be able to connect.

It's great that you've added the PDF of your bank transactions to your QuickBooks Desktop, but you're right, that won't pull any information. It's not that you're doing anything wrong. It's simply that the program doesn't work that way.

I encourage you to read through our series of bank feed articles that starts with Get started with Bank Feed for QuickBooks Desktop. You'll notice the rest of the articles in the series are linked near the top of that one.
