Hi there alexschippa,

Having backups can be a useful way to ensure that you have the data you need stored away for your business's books. Although QuickBooks Online doesn't have an integrated backup feature that creates a file for you, I have a few ideas of what you might be asking about with your question.

My first thought is that you were previously using QuickBooks Desktop and you're hoping to upload a backup file from that version of the program into QuickBooks Online. Getting your QuickBooks Desktop data into QuickBooks Online is a process, but we've plenty of help articles to guide you through the process. I can also share some steps with you.

The first step is opening the QuickBooks Desktop backup file in QuickBooks Desktop. Since the self-serve conversion process takes place in QuickBooks Desktop, this will get you started with where you'll need to be. If you no longer have access to QuickBooks Desktop, you can open your backup in a trial version of the program. I'll leave you with some links to help with this process.

Please note that opening your company file in the trial version of QuickBooks Desktop will also depend on what year your company file is from. If it's too old of a file, going through our Data Services department is the option you'll want to explore. At this time, Desktop conversions to Online have been put on hold due to COVID-19, but we hope to restart those as soon as possible.

Here are a couple more articles for you about converting to QuickBooks Desktop.

My next idea is that you created a backup of your QuickBooks Online data using a third-party application connected through the Apps tab or with a third-party integration. In those cases, please contact the support teams for those third-parties as they'll have the directions you need for how the application or integration works.
