How do I stop payroll for someone without removing their profile?

Our company had an owner briefly drawing a salary through payroll. Now, for a variety or reasons, we want to stop paying that salary (temporarily or permanently is not yet determined). How do we do this without deleting the employee profile or showing the employee as terminated? Thanks

Hi Dylan430,

Welcome to Community!  QuickBooks Online Payroll has the versatility you need to accomplish your goals with peace of mind.  I'd be happy to assist!

When  you'd like to keep an employee registered in your books but not include them when running payroll you can change their status to 'not on payroll', or you can uncheck the box for the employee when running payroll, so they're not included in the pay run.

Here's how to change the status;

1. Open Payroll and then Employees from the left menu

2. Select the employee to open their profile

3. Scroll down and click on the Edit ✎ in the Employment details section

4. Use the ▼ dropdown menu to select the status

5. Enter the Last day of work and the Reason for status change

6. Hit Save when done

Please don't hesitate to reach back out if you have other questions.  We'd love to help!
