Question

how to update a company file?

I purchased QB desktop 2020 a couple of days ago and I cannot open a restored backup copy of my  client's company file. It says i have to update the company file and ask the administrator to do this.

I have no idea what the program is talking about. I cannot find any articles on updating my company files only 'upgrading'.

I can't even open the file without being forced to update. I don't understand why it just won't open the stupid file. It's only a 2019 version.

I have my trusty .45 caliber quickbooks solution on standby if all else fails.

cheers

Mathew

So you want to open a QBB file of 2019 version on your 2020 version? Can you share the screenshot of error message?

Try login to your Windows as Admin, run your QB 2020, and retry to restore the QBB file.

Hey info139,

I'm happy to see you've upgraded to 2020! Having the most recent version ensures you'll always enjoy the best QuickBooks experience yet. It's our goal to make upgrading as seamless as possible, and I want to make sure you can access your client's books. I'll be happy to help you get up and running with the 2020 version.

This issue can typically be resolved by signing into QuickBooks Desktop as an admin user. You should be prompted to sign in as soon as you open QuickBooks, or when selecting your client's backup file. Just have the administrator enter their credentials, and you're all set.

If you continue to receive this error after signing in, please reach out for some real-time assistance with a trained agent. These agents will be happy to help you, and are great help in these situations. They have the ability to look into the specifics your account to quickly solve errors like this. You can read about our support policies here: Intuit QuickBooks Desktop software support policies

Don't hesitate to reach out. I want to make sure you're able to take advantage of this upgrade.

For anybody else that has this issue...

When you first install Quickbooks it creates an Admin account. No other account, even if it has full admin rights, will allow this process to happen. I noticed this when my account would not allow this to happen and I spent 45 min or so, getting more peeved as time went by, to eventually come across this thread and made me realize my mistake.

The original Admin account is the only account that will allow this upgrade function.
