I recently acquired a new client and the last time the HST was filed using the filing feature in QBO was 2016. How can I file returns, without messing up the years already closed, so that going forward the HST filing feature can be used?

Hi AshleyCPA,

Glad to hear from you again! I hope all is well on your end. Congrats on acquiring a new client, I can see that your business is growing. Rest assured, I'll be happy to share more info about filing your HST in QuickBooks.

Our Taxes feature offers an amazing hub where you can easily manage your taxes. Follow the steps below to access the hub:

  1. Select Taxes from the left menu
  2. Ensure Sales Tax is shown at the top. (Tip: If you use payroll in QuickBooks Online, you may need to select Sales Tax as opposed to Payroll Tax)
  3. Next to Sales Tax at the top, find the tax agency associated with the return you'd like to prepare the return for using the drop-down
  4. On the Returns tab, select Prepare return beside the next return you need to file
  5. Check the dates populated in the Start date and End date fields Note: QuickBooks Online automatically adds the dates of your most recent sales tax period, based on the payment schedule for the CRA. If necessary, you can change them, but remember that your payment schedule is set by the CRA. You can't change the dates just for your own requirements.
  6. Review the lines of the sales tax return, with the balance owing (or refund due) at the bottom
  7. To see individual transactions, select the dollar amount
  8. To make an adjustment to a line on the sales tax return, select Adjust.

Here's a helpful resource with info on filing sales tax in QBO: File sales tax.
