Hello malcolmsmeaton,

Thanks for being a part of the QuickBooks family! It's awesome to hear that you'll be sticking with us as you move to the cloud environment. I can help you sort this out.

When making the switch from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online, there are two processes you can follow.

The first is to convert your company file right from within QuickBooks Desktop by going to the Company menu and choosing Export Company File to QuickBooks Online. In the event that you no longer have access to your QuickBooks Desktop program, you can do this by opening a trial version of QuickBooks Desktop 2020, upgrading your file within that program, and then following the process. Note that this will only work if the previous version of QuickBooks Desktop you were using was 2012 or higher.

The other option is to go through our Data Services team. They'll be able to help you, especially when it comes to older company files and larger file sizes. It's just a simple form you fill out, a technician will be in touch, and then you'll be on your way.

Here are links for both processes as well as general information about migrating from Desktop to Online.

That should get you on your way, but let me know if you have additional questions! Have a great weekend.
