Question

I keep getting an error accepting an app trans. Product is gift certificate, non taxable. How do I set up quickbook to calculate and accept no tax?

 "Were sorry, QuickBooks encountered an error while calculating tax. Try reselecting the tax rate or reentering the product/service item and saving the form again.". Check account mapping in advanced settings and try again. Tried everything to fix.

Hi icepalacegolf,

Thanks for reaching out to us here.  QuickBooks Online provides the ability to record gift certificates and track the balance.  I would be glad to assist!

First you'll need to create a cash account that you’ll use to record and track the balance of your gift certificate.  Here's how;

1. Select +New from the left menu, then choose Cheque or Expense depending on how you paid for the certificate

3. From the Payee ▼ dropdown, select the supplier you got the certificate from

4. From the Bank account (cheque) or Payment account (expense) ▼ dropdown, select the account used to purchase the gift certificate

5. In the Category details section, select the ▼ dropdown menu and select the gift certificate account for this supplier. If you don’t have an account for the supplier yet, here's how to add one:

  • Select +Add new
  • Set the Account type to Bank and detail type to Cash on hand
  • Give the account a name
  • Enter the amount of the gift certificate
  • Hit Save

Note: This records the initial value of the certificate, so you can check the account balance to see the certificate's current balance.

When you're ready to use it, follow these steps;

1. Select +New from the left menu, then choose Expense

2. From the Payee ▼ dropdown, select the supplier you got the certificate from

3. Use the Payment account ▼ dropdown, choose the gift certificate account you just created

4. Enter the remaining details of the purchase, then hit Save

If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out.  We would be happy to help!
