Question

I'm entering a long(ish) split transaction (maybe 50 lines). I'm actively entering data, when the system auto-kicks me out and asks me to log back in.. I lose my work!

Hello and welcome.

I love that you're using QuickBooks Online to manage your business's books and I can appreciate needing extra time when you're entering a longer transaction. Don't worry, I've got two suggestions for you so you can prevent losing the work you've put in.

When you're working in QuickBooks Online, it's important to be "active" in order to make sure the program doesn't time you out. Although you're entering data, the program doesn't always consider that activity when you're on a single transaction for an extended period of time. There are two ways to help prevent that timeout that logs you out and causes you to need to re-enter your work.

The first recommendation I have is to regularly click the Save button on the transaction. This is beside the Save and Close button and makes sure that the works you've done so far is logged in QuickBooks. It also triggers the program to recognize that you're still working without closing and reopening the transaction.

My second recommendation is to adjust your time-out settings for your books. Here's how.

  1. Select the Gear icon.
  2. Choose Account and Settings.
  3. Click Advanced in the left menu.
  4. Click the pencil icon in the Other preferences section.
  5. Change the Sign me out if inactive for option.
  6. Click Save.

With these two options, you can have the confidence that your work is saving and that you'll have the time to enter it.

Give me a shout if you have more questions.
