I intend to migrate from QB Desktop to QBO but want to take this opportunity to restructure our chart of accounts.  I will need some GL accounts to migrate to a project and I will need to renumber some accounts so that I can use sub accounts.  I have read every article I can find on migrating to QBO but can not find any information on these topics.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi there Robyn26,

It's important that your books are organized correctly in order for you to be able to find your transactions easily. QuickBooks Online is a great tool to be able to access your books from anywhere with an internet connection. I can provide some information on migration from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

When it comes to migrating your data to Quickbooks Online, the chart of accounts created in the import process is based on the chart of accounts in your Desktop system. If you were to want to move money from one account to another, change account types, or edit the account numbers, you would have to do this either in QuickBooks Desktop before migrating your data over, or after the migration is complete within your QuickBooks Online account.

@Robyn26

You may open a new blank QBO account

then you may have 2 options:

1. Create a new company file on QBD to restructure your needs and migrate the restructured file to QBO.

2. Migrate the data manually (i.e export to XLS, prepare the data, import them into QBO)

You can utilize a migration tool for both options to speed up your work.
