Question

Previously filed sales tax return

Good morning!

I'm trying to get ready for filing my HST and am having a problem. I thought I had fixed it, but now I have an "unpaid bill" with a credit amount. I'm not sure how to shorten this, so it might be a bit long.

When I initially ran the "file sales tax option" it had a previous balance. I figured out that I had entered April 1 instead of March 31. This took care of the previous balance. Then when I was looking at the GJ entry, it had left 351 in the payable account. I double checked the payment, and we had paid it all, so I corrected that. Now I have a credit balance in my AP account. I want to verify the actual sales tax report, but it's not listed in the "Previous Sales Tax" reports. The last one is Dec 2020. If I try to "File Sale Tax" it says that I can't file a return that has already been completed. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any advice is welcomed. Thank you

Hi Shannon83,

It's great to hear from you again. QuickBooks Desktop has a powerful sales tax module to help you with tracking your sales tax. I know how vital it is to have these numbers accurate. I can point you in the right direction.

Where there have been a few adjustments made already, I suggest contacting your accountant to clear this up. They're the experts in their field and will be able to access all the changes and know the best way to proceed. If you don't have one that you work with, you can find out through this link: Find an Accountant.
