Removing Old Transactions

Hello,

I have data dating back to 2005 that I know longer need. I would like to remove old transactions. When I delete a transaction a message appears that says deleting this transaction will cause the payments to be unapplied. What is my next step to ensure I'm removing all of this data correctly without impacting my current books.
