I am wondering if you can help me with a Sales Tax Item setup issue – I created a sales tax item for another province – HST Ontario. We currently use GST/PST.

The HST sales tax amount is not populating correctly.

We think the problem may arise from the assigned name.....RECEIVER GENERAL....rather than RECEIVER GENERAL FOR CANADA – is there a way to change the name in the Sales Tax Management Screen?

Welcome back, Shaunne,

It's great to hear from you again, and I'm excited to see you're still working with QuickBooks. Provincial and territorial sales tax rates are determined by the government, so I appreciate how vital it is that these amounts are precise in your books. I can help you with working with sales tax in QuickBooks Desktop.

When you set up sales tax in QuickBooks Desktop, it's possible to set up for as many provinces and territories across Canada as you'd like. By using the in-product setup options for these areas, the program will automatically generate the appropriate sales tax rate. In this case, the Receiver General designation shouldn't be an issue as that's the sales tax agency the program attributes it to. But, since you're seeing a different rate than what HST should be, I suspect that you may have set up a custom rate instead of turning on a provincial rate.

I recommend starting by reviewing the steps in this article: How to set up sales tax in QuickBooks Desktop. Not only does it walk you through configuring sales tax in your settings, but it also has a section titled Set up sales tax for another province, which takes you step-by-step through that process.

If you did create a custom tax rate by accident and would like to get rid of it, you can go to the Lists menu, choose Sales Tax Code List, and then right-click on the sales tax code in question to see the options.

Give that a go and let me know if it makes a difference! I'm here to help.
