Upgrading QB files on Server 2012 when migrating to 2020

I have QB 2017 Desktop installed on workstations the the files live on MS Server 2012.  As payroll will no longer be supported in the 2020 version, we will be upgrading to QB 2020 by end of May 2020.

I would like to know if I need to upgrade the v2017 installation on the server when v2020 is installed on the workstations.  If so, does this mean a full uninstall and reinstall or will it be an upgrade?

Hey GMG2020,

Great job keeping your eye out and preparing for the future payroll update. Updating QuickBooks may seem like a long task but don't worry we make this easy for you.

It's important to make sure that all computers that have QuickBooks installed, including the server are updated so everyone can continue working on the same file. Don't worry, you won't need to uninstall anything.
You should install the database server manager first to make sure the host is set up before having any other computers trying to access the company file and allow multi-user.

Here are the steps to update the server.
1. Close all open programs on your server computer, including QuickBooks.
2. Open the install file you downloaded. It's called Setup_QuickBooks.exe.
3. Follow the onscreen instructions. If you need to find your product or license numbers, here's how to find them.
4. When QuickBooks asks you to choose an install type, select Custom or Network Options. Then select Next. Don't select Express.
5. Choose the best option for your network setup and then select Next. Both the options install the Database Server Manager. (If you want Database Server Manager on your server computer, select I will NOT be using QuickBooks Desktop on this computer, but I'll be storing the company file)
6. Follow the rest of the onscreen instructions. When you’re ready, select Install. Windows may ask you for permission.

Then run the install wizard on each computer and follow these steps.
1. Select Custom and Network Options and then Next.
2. Select the option that describes how you’ll use QuickBooks.
3. On the next screen, select Change the install location.
4. Select Next to start the install.
5. When it finishes installing, select Open QuickBooks to get started.

Once that's done you will should scan the company file again with the database server manager. That allows the company file to be shared in 2020 and be accessed by all users. These are the steps to perform the scan using the server manager. When that is all completed you will be good to go to use 2020 on your computers and servers in a multi-user environment.

Hope this helps you get ready for the new tax update!
