Question

When I enter mileage into QBO, after I input addresses, mileage is prepopulated, but is about half of what it should be, as if it is giving me miles instead of km.

Hi there userdougdickcpa,

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community, and thanks for bringing this to my attention. Having the correct unit of measure is an important piece of the puzzle when you're entering your data, so I want to ensure that this situation of seeing miles instead of kilometres is resolved. I'll get you started with some ideas about what might be going on.

When working with the Mileage feature in QuickBooks Online, the program should default to kilometres when you have a Canadian account. Since you're seeing miles, it could mean that you've set up a US account by mistake. If you created your account at quickbooks.intuit.com/, that's our US site. For a Canadian account, qbo.ca is the website to visit.

If you did accidentally sign up for a US account, I recommend connecting with the US support team to discuss canceling or you can use the steps outlined in this article to cancel yourself: Cancel your QuickBooks Online subscription or trial. Once you've done that, you'll be able to head to qbo.ca to subscribe for the Canadian edition of the software.

Please note that if you've already been entering data in a US version that there isn't a way to migrate it to the Canadian version. It would mean re-entering data as the two programs don't communicate with each other. This is because each are designed for their particular country's taxes and other details like that. There may be a third-party app that can help, which you can check out through the Apps tab in the program if you'd like.

You're welcome to contact a member of the Canadian support team if you're certain you have a Canadian account or aren't quite sure. We can check the account's region on our back-end after collecting some account information from you and then get you back on track to tracking your kilometres in QuickBooks Online. Here's how to reach out.

Schedule a Callback or start a Chat: click (?)Help in the upper right > type and enter "Contact support" into the QB Assistant > click Contact Us > explain your situation > click Let's Talk > choose Get a callback or Start a Chat. Support is available from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET.
