Question

Why are the payees all the same name? I run a martial arts club and every transaction is showing as the same person.

For example, every membership transaction is showing that it's coming from "Joe Smith" (example).

Hi Info1706,

Making sure every transaction has the correct payee is essential in order to keep track of all payments in your books. The bank feed feature in QuickBooks Online offers the ability to easily choose the right payee of the transaction before adding or matching it in the system. I'll be glad to provide you with some information on why every transaction can show the same payee.

One of the reasons that every transaction can display the same payee is that when you choose a payee for the first time, the system applies that payee to all transactions that have the same description. Don't worry, there's a way to deactivate this option in the system. You can refer to the following steps to deactivate the auto payees application on transactions.

1. Select Transactions/Banking  on the left navigation menu.
2. Click on the small Gear icon on that page.
3. Find Enable suggested categorization and uncheck the box.

Doing this will prevent the system from applying one payee to all transactions that have the same description. In case there are transactions already added in the Categorized tab, this change will not affect them. You'll need to Undo them which will bring those transactions to the review tab. Once on the Review tab, you can choose the right payee before adding or matching them.

Also, I recommend following some browser troubleshooting steps by clearing cache and cookies as they can impact the functioning of the system.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, I'll be happy to help.
