Good morning - I am an online student of Robertson College using QB desktop 2017. Last weekend, when I was trying to download QB file assignment I got this notification on the screen "You've reached maximum # of unregistered uses". I tried to re-register by supplying information ask. When I opened again the file, it says:

 

"Important: Use this sample file to practice while you learn QuickBooks Desktop. Dont use it as your company file. 

While you're using this file, QuickBooks Desktop will set today's date to 12/15/2007."

 

I am hesitant to continue that if I use this QB version and I'm on the middle of the assignment, something might happen and my effort will just go in vain (70ish page assignment). 

 

Kindly advise if it's okay to use this "sample" version and will yield the same result in the end i.e. reports.  Thanks so much!

Hey aniway.

 

It's awesome that you are using QuickBooks Desktop for your school work. It's a great learning tool! Not only is it simple to use, the program comes with built-in warnings that'll alert you know when a feature isn't being used correctly.

 

Sample files are created with specific date ranges that may not work with your assignment, so you should reach out to your professor to see what they'd like you to use. Sample files are used to try out QuickBooks or test how to do something without having an affect on your books in your actual company file.

 

If your professor does require you to make a new company file, you can do so by following these steps:

 

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
2. In the No Company Open window, select Create a new company.
3. At this point, you have two setup options:
A) Select Express Start if you want to get started right away. You only need to enter your business name, industry, and business type to create your company file. You can enter this info later on.
B) Select Detailed Start if you want to do a complete setup so all of your info is in from the start.
4. Follow the onscreen steps to finish the setup. Note: If you have an existing company file in QuickBooks, give your new one a unique name. This prevents QuickBooks from accidentally overwriting your data.
