I have added a new expense account. I want to put an existing account under it as a sub account. The new account is not an option in the drop down box.

I'm here to ensure you can successfully add a sub-account in the chart of accounts, Dwight.

When adding a sub-account, we must ensure you've selected the same account type as their parent since QBO will not let you save it. Also, I suggest searching for the parent account's name in the search field in the Chart of Accounts to check if you've successfully added itHere's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then Chart of accounts.
  2. Search the name in the Filter by name or number field.

If the expense account you've added is there, we can perform some troubleshooting steps to determine if this issue is browser-caused. I recommend logging into your QBO account in another browser by using an incognito browser.

Here are the keyboard shortcuts you can utilize depending on the browser you are using:

  • For Microsoft Edge, press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • For Safari, press Command + Shift + N.
  • For Firefox, press Ctrl + Shift + P.

If the private browsing session doesn't work, you can clear the browser's cache so the system can restart. Also, you can use up-to-date browsers to maximize your QBO experience.

In the meantime, if the account you created isn't on the list, we can recreate it to ensure it's saved correctly. I can walk you through the process.

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then Chart of accounts.
  2. On the right corner, click New.
  3. Add the necessary information in the Account window.
  4. Once done, hit Save and close.

After that, you can proceed to create a sub-account for that account.
