Hello, @funzero.

You'll need to reactivate the deleted account to update it's opening balance equity, then deactivate them again.

If you wish to reactivate the account, here's how to proceed:

  1. Select the Transactions, then choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Click the Gear icon.
  3. Tick the Include Inactive.
  4. On your keyboard, press Ctrl+F to search for the deleted account.
  5. Once searched, click Make Active under the Action column.

When an account with a remaining balance is set to inactive or deleted in QuickBooks, the software will automatically generate an entry that effectively make the balance to zero. This means that QuickBooks will record a transaction opposite to the existing balance to ensure that the account's balance is adjusted to zero.

Once done, you can then now edit the opening balance equity for that account. Take note that any changes on the amount will also create a new balance for reactivated account.

Here's how:

  1. Go back to the Chart of Accounts.
  2. Open the reactivated account, then click the View Register.
  3. Choose the opening balance equity you wish to change, select the Edit tab.
  4. Once done, hit Save.

After modifying, you can then now deactivate the account again.

You can visit this article for more information regarding your inactive accounts.

Furthermore, you'll want to merge one account into another to keep your accounts organized.
