confirming payments

I have deposited a check from an Insured that pays for an invoice, but there is a difference that I have to pay the contractor, how do I record these 2 actions, or at least the payment of the invoice

To better assess your concern, would you mind elaborating on the workflow of this transaction? Also, to which payment you are referring to. Is this coming from an insurance agency or a third-party agency? Additional information is much appreciated.
