Converting to QuickBooks online from Desktop Pro 2020

I am considering converting from QuickBooks desktop pro 2020 to online. I really only use QB for income/expense tracking - there are no invoices created no inventory to keep track of. Pretty simple - bank accounts, income/expense tracking, P&L reports, loans, and check writing. I feel like converting at the start of the year would be helpful and easier. A few questions.

 

1. Is that data that is in desktop still available to refer back to if moving to online?

2. I have two companies - personal and business. It is my understanding that in order to have 2 companies they each need their own subscription. Is it possible to keep both companies under one subscription but to separate information when it comes to reports? Someone mentioned "classes", but I don't really know what that means since I don't have access to QB online.

First, when you convert your data from QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2020 to QuickBooks Online, the majority of your data will transfer over. Please be aware that not everything will transfer seamlessly due to differences in features between the versions. Yes, you can still refer back to your Desktop version and run reports or look at historical data after you migrate to QBO.

 

Second, yes, each company requires its own subscription. There isn't a way to manage two separate companies under a single subscription with completely segregated data. Regarding classes, this feature allows you to classify transactions within the same company. This offers you the benefit of gaining a clearer understanding of your sales, expenses, or profitability by business segments.

You have QB Desktop with a non subscription license, correct? Why do you have to switch to QB Online? 

If you want to use QBO to manage multi company files with class, you can purchase a 3rd party conversion service. Otherwise, you can start from scratch in QB Online.
