Credit cards - combining the accounts

I took over bookkeeping from an owner. His credit card had been compromised and he received a new cc number. He created a new credit card account in QBO when this happened. The bank merely changed the card number, but views it as the same account. When I downloaded the new credit card in QBO, all of the old transactions from before the incident also downloaded. I just excluded them from the new card. My mistake.  So he has 2 credit cards in QBO and the bank views them as one. I'm trying to straighten this mess out. Can I just combine the two credit card accounts into one in QBO? There is a balance owed on the old credit card, so I can't just close it.

QuickBooks sees it as the same account, dturtonrmf. That’s why transactions from the previous account also showed on the new one.

Yes, you can combine both credit card accounts in QBO. We can update the old account’s information and then disconnect the new one. After, merge the two accounts.

Here’s how to edit a connected account:

  1. On the Banking page, click pencil icon at the upper-right corner of the bank tile.
  2. Select Edit sign-in info.
  3. From there, change the details.

Please follow these steps on how to disconnect it:

  1. Still on the Banking page, click the pencil icon for the new account.
  2. Check the Disconnect this account on save box.
  3. Click Save and Close

After the process, you can manage your downloaded transactions and then reconcile them.

If there's anything else that I can help you, please reach out to me.

I am struggling to find the banking page with the pencil in the corner in desktop pro 2020. Can you point the way?

Hello there, @BB7301.

You can find it through the Banking menu in QuickBooks Desktop. From there, choose Bank Feeds, then Bank Feeds Center.

While navigating through the program, I went to the same page to look for the pencil icon. The option isn’t showing on my end.

Please check out my screenshot for visual reference:

Can you tell me what specific function that Pencil icon does? Knowing more about it can help me direct you to the area where it’s located.

I’d really appreciate any additional information. Please leave a comment and add it to your response. I’ll do everything I can to help you. Have a good one!

I appreciate you reaching out to us, @dturtonrmf.

When QuickBooks exhibits this behavior when attempting to merge accounts, some basic troubleshooting actions can resolve the issue. You can start by using a private browser to visit QuickBooks Online (QBO). We can more easily determine if this is a browser issue because this type of browser does not keep a cache.

Here's how:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  • Microsoft Edge: Ctrl + Shift + P

Try merging the accounts again. You can clear your regular web browser's browsing history if it works. It will delete any previously saved browsing data that may have contributed to the problem. Otherwise, you can be thorough by using other compatible browsers.
