Hi there, @whitley3330, and Welcome to the Community.

Allow me to help you with your concern where you are unsure if you need a certain subscription to do 1099's or if is there a way to add them in QuickBooks Online without a payroll subscription.

You can e-file 1099 forms in QuickBooks Online. To e-file and e-pay taxes through QuickBooks, you'll need an active payroll subscription. However, you will need to have the QuickBooks Online (QBO) Contractor Payments feature and a QuickBooks Online Payroll Core, Premium, or Elite subscription to do so.

QuickBooks subscriptions come with a 30-day trial for payroll to help e-file/e-pay. If you don't have these features, you can still prepare the 1099 forms within QBO and then file them manually.

After subscribing, you'll be able to set up your account and start e-pay and e-file. If you're using QuickBooks Contractor Payments, you can create and e-file 1099s. You can sign up for this feature by setting up direct deposit. You can also check out our different plans for paying contractors.

Please feel free to ask any additional questions you may have in your 1099 in QuickBooks Online. Have a great day!

Is it required that I have to be enrolled in the subscription all year, or can I sign up in January? We process contractor payments independently of QBO.

Welcome to the Community space. Let me provide you with details when filing 1099 using QuickBooks Online (QBO).

You don't need to have a QBO subscription for the entire year when filing 1099's if that aligns better with your business needs since you already process contractor payments. There is no requirement to maintain an active QBO subscription throughout the entire year solely for 1099 filing. You can sign up in January, file the 1099s, and then decide if you want to continue the subscription for other accounting needs.

If you sign up for QBO in January, you can file and submit your 1099 information within the software. QBO will then distribute the 1099 forms to your contractors by the January 31st deadline.

I'll be right here to keep supporting you throughout this process. If you have any other questions related to subscriptions or any aspect of the program, feel free to ask.

@whitley3330

If you don't want to use QBO Payroll, you can use Melio to pay your 1099 contractors and you can prepare the information you need to submit your 1099 in just a few clicks. Melio provides a downloadable CSV file of all your payments so you can view, classify, and export your payment history.
