Question

Do you call natural gas, telephone, electricity, insurance and the like, category or accounts if they're expenses?

Is there a way to have my category list displayed in a stand along page to which I might edit, delete or create new like I was able to do when I used Quicken for 20 years? I was persuaded to enroll in QBs online be cause it was to be so much easier.  I'm in my 3rd month and I am not happy....

Quickbooks Online is not even a little bit user friendly.   Sorry you got suckered into it.  I would ditch them as soon as you can.

Thank you for dropping by the Community today, ronnovak44.

I recognize the challenges of transitioning to a different platform and being unable to locate the features you are familiar with. I'm here to help and offer clarity on the category and account types.

Natural gas, telephone, electricity, insurance, and the like are the names of your expense accounts. In QuickBooks Online (QBO), every account listed in your chart of accounts has both an account type and a detail type. Detail types will help choose the right account type and break down your account types into categories.

On the other hand, the account types determine which financial report QuickBooks adds each account’s data to and analyzes the financial health of your business. For more in-depth information, click on the following link: Learn about account types and detail types in QuickBooks Online.

Regarding your other concern, you can let our product developers know that having the option to change the display view for your category list to stand alone is a great addition to QBO. Ideas and suggestions like this one will guide our engineers on which area in the product needs further improvement and features to include in future releases.

Here's how:

  1. In your company, navigate to the Gear icon in the upper right of your screen and choose Feedback.
  2. Enter your comments and product suggestions in the field box.
  3. Click Next to submit.

Explore the latest news, press releases, and enhancements that developers have rolled out on the QuickBooks Blog. I want to be sure you're acclimated to the tasks and features you can do in the online program. I've collated some resources that include online tutorials to navigate your way around QuickBooks, topics to get started, as well as details about the chart of accounts:

Don't hesitate to reach out if you need further assistance with managing your items, accounts, categories, and other product-related concerns. I'm here to help you make the most out of your experience with QBO. Have a good one, ronnovak44.
