I made a mistake. I paid my boss' personal income tax with the business account. And I realized I did that after I sent the reports to the accountant to file this year's taxes. after that, I reclassified the transaction as a shareholder distribution, but it still shows as a business expense. and I don't know how to correct it.

Hello there, @alx. I'm here to ensure you'll be able to correct the categorization of the expense transactions in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

To fix this, you can create an expense to record the personal expense with the business account. Here's how:

  1. In your QBO account, select the + New button and choose either Check or Expense.
  2. Next, select a Payee from the dropdown menu.
  3. Then, click the Bank Account used to make the purchase.
  4. After that, select the tax category that fits your need in the Category details section.
  5. Ensure to enter the amount of the purchase.
  6. Once done, select Save and close.

When finished, reimburse the company by creating a bank deposit. I'll guide you on how.

  1. Go back to the + New menu and click Bank Deposit.
  2. Next, select the Account to add the reimbursement, and enter the correct date.
  3. Then, navigate to the Add funds to this deposit section and enter the person who made the personal expense and choose the account in the Received From field,
  4. Choose the Payment Method and enter the reimbursement amount.
  5. Once done, select Save and close.

Before performing the steps above, I recommend reaching out to your accountant for additional assistance in categorizing the transaction. They can also provide advice and an additional set of steps to handle this. If you're not affiliated with one, you can use our Find An Accountant tool to look for one near you.
