Estimates converted to invoices but status stays as accepted or pending.

Why after converting an estimate to an invoice do some of my estimates remain as either accepted or pending status.  Others done the same way go to closed status.  I believe we are doing it the same way all the time but maybe something odd is causing this issue.  Any thoughts?
