Where can QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2024 be purchased?  I am not interested in QuickBooks online or other subscription services.

Intuit is offering Pro 2024 only directly - by calling their sales phone number.

What is the cost to upgrade from QB Pro Desktop 2021 to the new subscription based plan?

I am a small bookkeeping service and have been in business, using Quickbooks, since 1998. I own 22 different QB desktop versions. I only have one client who uses QB online. QB online is a terrible product for anyone who actually does accounting. Very slow, not user friendly at all, extremely clunky and completely lacks required reports I use for other clients. It is also a nightmare to find/fix issues when making corrections to client mistakes. Other than my one client, I will NEVER use it. I would go back to pencil and recording keeping graph paper before I switched to online.

The last QB Pro 2021 desktop I purchased was $404.69 from Staples, and I was able to use that for 3 years before now needing to upgrade in order to continue having the pleasure of using the software.  I just spoke with the billing dept and they told me that it will now be an annual cost of $649 for the QB Desktop Pro Plus subscription, but could not confirm whether or not there will be price increases at the time of the automatic renewal to my credit card. I forgot to inquire if that price includes the payroll or if I will have to continue paying the additional (approx) $550 annual p/r fee as well.

These are steep price increases for small bookkeeping services like mine. Maybe it would just be cheaper to farm out the payroll to a third party service and continue using the old desktop without the updates. Does anyone know of a good payroll service?

@Paying Customer

You have to call their sales team or purchase it through selected partners (tax exempt, no credit card required).

The process of trying to purchase QuickBooks desktop seems about as close to impossible as possible.  i have called the proadvisor support line, the sales line, online chat, and the phone # listed on the 2021 Order Form.  I am struggling to describe my request.  My request is to receive an order form for QB DT 2024.

Contact me in private and we can help to obtain the new license for QB Desktop 2024 (tax exempt, no credit card, can get $100 cashback).

I just attempted to do this - it's clear Intuit/Quickbooks wants to make this as difficult as possible.  After 25 minutes with various sales agents I gave up.

Quickbooks wants everyone online so they can mine and sell the data - if you read the privacy policies you can see the real value of their accounting clients isn't the subscription but the money they make using your data.

Buh bye, Quickbooks.  You were good for a long time, then mediocre, and now you're just irrelevant.

@Pint

We can help to obtain the license for QB Desktop 2024 (tax exempt, no credit card required) and you can get a cashback. If you decided switching to another cloud based accounting app, you can use the trial version of QB Desktop for good to access your historical data and start from scratch in a new program to lower your conversion costs.

I have a quick books license and sent my payment in to purchase my 2024 quick books Pack/with Enterprise

However, quickbooks has still not put the products codes into my account so I can download the 2024 versions

of quick books and Enterprises.

It has been 3 months,  5 calls each 30 minutes,  putting my payment into servier to activate my product codes

How frustrating that I can get no help

I called. It’s a yearly subscription at $650 for one user.  They are trying to force everybody into the online platform which all bookkeepers do not like. I’ve been using QuickBooks desktop since 1996 when it was called QuickBooks 6.0.  I started looking at other alternatives.  I called Sage and they knew which version I was on because they have had 48% of new sales from those of us using desktop 2021.  Unfortunately intuit has grown into an Amazon and it is no longer for small businesses.  If anybody reads this and has found an inexpensive alternative I am all ears. After 27 years of using this product it’s time to find something else

Been using Quicken since 1992, and QuickBooks shortly thereafter. I have 8 clients who love the desktop, but 2 I had to move to Online. HATE IT.  Subscription is the only way to keep using it (with imports and payroll) beyond May 2024.

What's the price?

February 9, 2024

Just an update.  I had QuickBooks Premier Plus 2021.  I called the sales line and was able to get the 2024 Premier Plus desktop edition.  As we all know, you can no longer just purchase the software.  They only offer the subscription and the price is much higher than we've historically paid.  For 3 users, my cost was $2384.82 for the year.

The sales guy I spoke to confirmed that the desktop version is going to be phased out.  I spent a week or so evaluating other options.  I find my business is too big for QB online.  We're a large doctor's office.  I don't bill from QB. And QB online is geared towards non-accountants running their business.  As an actual accountant, I loathe the lack of flexibility in QB online.  So QB online and other similar options aren't feasable.  But it seems the next option is to go with a full ERP system, which is significantly more expensive (starting at $15-20k/year) and includes features we are too small to need.

When you browse the QB website, the only desktop subscription option available is Enterprise.  I balked at that cost because 3 users without taxes was over $3000 for the year, but even that is a fraction of the larger ERP options.  The intuit salesman confirmed that while the other renditions of desktop are indeed going away, Enterprise is here to stay.  I know that may not be good news for smaller businesses.  But if anyone has a mid-size business that's too big for QB online but too small for some of those other options, knowing that Enterprise is sticking around is a big relief.

Intuit is changing gears again.  I just opened QB Pro 2020 and had a popup inform me that the "new" desktop versions would no longer be available to subscribe to after July 31, 2024.  Further, since I am using an unsupported, non-subscription version, I am susceptible...blah blah blah...and should upgrade to the latest version ($600 a year?) by 7/31.

I've used Quickbooks since the semi-lame "version 1" and was part of the population that helped Intuit grow with Quickbooks, TurboTax personal and TurboTax business.  Now it seems Intuit is saying, "Yeah but we now want more from you.  Take it or leave it."  I do my 2-person payroll manually, use IRS fill-in forms for 941's, and free Social Security Business Services Online for annual W2's and W3 with automatic online filing of government copies.

I hope to continue with my "unsupported" QB2020 for a few more years and then just quit.  All that's left for Intuit to do to me is block integration of QB2020's export to TurboTax Business.  They've not threatened that yet, but it seems like something the new devil management at Intuit might do, and if they do, I'll just enter data manually into Turbotax (or whatever tax programs I switch to after over 20 years.)

Observation:  It seems to me that Microsoft has an opportunity here.  Either dust off their old Microsoft Office Accounting, which was almost a Quickbooks clone anyway, or offer a "light" version of their Dynamics 365 for very small businesses.  I can understand they might have had government fears previously, but now that Intuit has all but abandoned small businesses, they could jump in and own the small business accounting market, and at the same time offer an upgrade path to a system that is vastly superior to Quickbooks Enterprise.  In the meantime, fingers crossed for my 2023 1120S return and continuing with my unsupported QB2020!

February 9, 2024

They already took away the ability to import QB Desktop 2021 into ProSeries last year. Not that I expect to be able to import Desktop 2024 into ProSeries 2023, but crossing my fingers.

i have connected with an Intuit agent.  Thanks for all replies.

So far I have heard mention of 3 other alternatives to QBs. I know nothing about any of them. I have to research. Or you tell me what you know and are there any others that folks are using?

Drake
Sage
Freshbooks

Here's a link to Drake:  Buy Drake Accounting | Drake Accounting (drakesoftware.com)

I have to point out that the only people I know who use it are CPAs who have it in a bundle with their professional tax preparation software.  They mostly use it as after the fact write up software.  The other two on your list are subscriptions only.   Drake accounting is available either desktop or cloud.  The good news is it appears to be outright purchase rather than subscription (although I'm not absolutely certain of that.)

Sage is the former Peachtree Accounting and is subscription, like QB, although at a somewhat lower price.  I haven't used it since it became Sage, but when it was Peachtree it was radically different from Quickbooks, and some people I knew found moving to Peachtree from Quickbooks or vice versa to be a bit of culture shock, although they did finally adapt.

Freshbooks appears to be another cloud based subscription.  I've no experience with it.

February 28, 2024

@Gloria1563ht

They don't offer QB Desktop 2024 with a disc. Only download version is available. You can call their sales team to purchase the license. Another option, you can get it from selected partners (tax exempt, can get $100 cashback).
