Question

How do you mark an income account for 1099 tracking? We use a contra income account for referral fees, but they need 1099s.

I've got some insights on marking an income account for 1099 tracking, cparks.

If you need to file both the 1099-NEC and the 1099-MISC, you'll need to have a different expense account for each form. If your contra income account is under the Expense type, you can map it for 1099.

If you paid 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC contractors and posted to the same account, you'll need to edit your chart of accounts. This ensures separate accounts are available for each form to use. Then, you can create a journal entry to move amounts or edit existing payments to the new accounts.

To do this, you can follow these steps:

  1. Go to Reports and search for the 1099 Transaction Detail Report.
  2. Run the report and verify the amounts are showing in the correct accounts for the 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC. This will allow you to map the accounts through the 1099 process.
  3. You can also use the 1099 Contractor Balance Detailor 1099 Contractor Balance Summary reports for more information.
  4. Go to the Gear icon and choose Chart of accounts.
  5. Select New. Depending on your account view, you'll see a panel labeled New account or New category
  6. Add a journal entry or edit existing contractor payments by selecting Expenses.
  7. Filter the transactions to identify the contractor payments you need to edit.
  8. Once the payment has been located, you can select View/Edit to enter the transaction or choose the Category dropdown and a new account.
  9. Run a 1099 Transaction Detail Report to see the changes reflected.

Once you've completed these steps, you can begin filing your 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC forms.
