How long should a data rebuild take ?

So i ran required updates on Users workstations on Tuesday night , Yesterday out of 3 company files users were unable to open1 file . This one file kept prompting for the user to down load file doctor .

Today when i get in to see what was going on i tried to download the new file doctor to the virtual machine that shares the files with users . I was unable to because it could not register my license .  I chatted with support who end up calling me . They remoted into the server dedicated to QuickBooks and without looking at the QB log ,Event viewer or anything else for that matter told me in less then 5 mins my file was corrupted and its 5.99 per mega byte for them to rebuild or i can buy a support contract for 3999.99 a year ... So i got off the phone and ran the QuickBooks doctor i had on the server . I got a pop up that my file was fixed with instructions to resort our master names list , then to rebuild the file , the files is about a gig and i started the rebuild 2.5 hours ago and its still running , The circle is still moving and i still can move the mouse so it doesn't seem frozen . I am trying to figure out how long it may take to rebuild a 1 gig file .

I read that as long as i can move the mouse its working and not to interrupt the process i am just looking for a confirmation that i am not sitting here wasting time ...

Thanks for any and all help

Hello @naviseyer

Thank you for providing me with the necessary information. I would like to share some information with you about the verify rebuild process.

The duration of rebuilding a company file may vary depending on various factors such as the size and complexity of the file, the server's hardware specifications, and the resources available during the rebuild process.

While I'm unable to provide an exact timeframe for your situation, it's common for the rebuild process to take several hours, especially for larger files. It's important to note that if the circle is still moving and you can move the mouse, it indicates that the process is still running and not frozen.

I suggest that you let the rebuild process continue without interruption as recommended in the QuickBooks Doctor pop-up message. Interrupting the process could potentially lead to data corruption or further issues.

If you're concerned about the time it's taking, you can periodically check the status or progress bar within QuickBooks to monitor the progress. This will give you an idea of how much progress has been made.

Please keep in mind that the rebuild process is resource-intensive, so it's advisable to perform it during a time when the QuickBooks server is not heavily utilized by other processes or users.

See this article for more details: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

I also recommend that you check this page to help you keep your current report settings and have them carry over the next time you run reports: Create, access and modify memorized reports.

In case there's anything else that you need assistance with, feel free to mention my name in the comment section below. I am always here to help you.

So can you please provide a better explanation as to why everything was working fine for the last few months and up until end of day Tuesday 2/27/24 . On Tuesday night after everyone signed out and left I went in and downloaded and installed the Quickbooks updates .. these updates were on workstation and had nothing at all to do with the file or server where our Quickbooks files are located .

‘Wednesday morning 2/28/24 users could not access this one specific file out of the 3 we have . They were getting a message to download Quickbooks file doctor . So they stopped and waited for me . When I got in this morning I could not download the quickbooks file dr onto the server ,its wouldn’t register my license number . I contacted  support they removed in . They were barely on for 5 mins and announced the file was corrupted . Then they gave me the price of 3999.99 for a year of support of 5.99 per mega byte .   In the past whenever I called support it was part of the subscription we have this time without a simple explanation I was being sold a support subscription

anyway I ran the last version of the file dr . It said the file was fixed but I should do the things I mentioned in my first post which I did … then after waiting 4 hrs for the rebuild now the file seems worse then before the rebuild . Before the rebuild I could open the file , now I can’t , I have pages of errors it fixed and pages of errors it couldn’t fix . I just don’t understand where the errors came from since everything was working perfectly on Tuesday . I need to provide an explanation to my employer . The file shouldn’t have had anything to do with the Tuesday updates so if anyone has any ideas of what caused this please let me know .also if anyone can explain the support issue . We have a subscription for Quickbooks desktop enterprise with 6 or 8 users . Thanks so much for any info you can provide it’s greatly appreciated

Hi there, naviseyer.

I'll give you some information to clarify and provide further guidance about this issue.

Before we start, can you tell me what error message they receive when users try to access the company file? If the error message they received specifically indicates a data issue, the rebuild process is indeed one of the recommended solutions to address it. The rebuild process attempts to fix any data-related errors within your QuickBooks file. You can also use the QuickBooks File Doctor to fix it.

However, certain errors may require additional assistance from our technical support team. These errors may be more complex or require specialized knowledge to resolve effectively. In such cases, it is recommended to reach out to our technical support to help you resolve any specific errors that may be causing issues with your file.

To reach them:

  1. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  2. Click on Contact Us.
  3. Enter a brief description of your issue, then hit Continue.
  4. Sign in to your Intuit account select Continue and then Continue with my account. If you don't already have an account, make sure to Create a new account.
  5. We'll email you a single-use code. Enter your code and select Continue. If you have more than one account, select the account you want to use and then Continue.
  6. Then choose whether to chat with us or Have us call you.

Regarding data recovery, if you're using a QuickBooks Enterprise subscription (Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Accountant) plan, data recovery services are already included in your subscription. This means you do not need to pay extra for data recovery, as it is covered by your plan. Here's an article for more information: QuickBooks Data Services: Standard Data Recovery Services (Price list)

On the other hand, if you receive specific error codes, you can use the suggested solutions provided in this link: Fix error 15XXX when updating QuickBooks Desktop or QuickBooks Desktop Payroll.
