How to upgrade Company File from Older Version?

I am trying to update my QuickBooks Pro 2006 to QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2019. I tried exporting the data as a .qbb file and .qbm file; however, I have been unable to successfully transfer the data. I am aware that there is a differences in the way the data is represented in each of the versions. Is there any way I can export the current data from my older version to the newly purchased version?

QB 2007, released in late 2006, changed the data base from flat tables to a Relational database. QB 2013 was another significant year for Reprogramming.

Intuit has a 3-year lifecycle. You would need to go, at a minimum:

2006-2009-2013-2016-2019 And Rebuild the file in between.

Or, you give the file to Intuit to Update for you.

And the Backup, or .qbb file, is something you would be making after every work session and keeping on a USB or in the Cloud, a Safe place, so that if the computer dies of the program crashes, you still have the Backup file to use for disaster recovery. Set the program to "rotate" = keep only 3 or 5 and when you make the Next Backup, it offers to delete that Oldest for you.

Yes you can update but 2006 to 2019 is too big a jump to make it once - it will have to be done in steps.

The 2013 version might be a suitable mid-step, if you can find someone using it.

Alternately i'm sure you can pay Intuit to do it for you.

wait, wait, wait....So youre telling me if someone has an old (lets say 2006) Quickbooks and they just purchased a new Quickbooks pro 2019, they would need to buy a "midway Quickbooks Version" of like 2013 or so in order to successfully transfer their files to the new 2019 they JUST purchased....what an absolute crock. Sounds like a money grab to me..why would someone have to purchase a version theyre not going to use to just transfer their files to the newest desktop pro version they just bought. Garbage. That should be changed or QB should convert it completely for free..Forgive me if that is already a free conversion service..but if it isnt, it should be. Completely unfair to do to people who are buying your products.

Hello,

I got the point and see how important to transfer files from the older version to the latest one without using the other QuickBooks version. If the gap of the version is too long, we're unable to jump and make it once. It's advisable to use a version that is closer to your old one. This helps you ensure to transfer the file successfully.

You may consider searching for some websites that offer free transferring data to the latest version.

Let us know if you have other concerns with QuickBooks. Stay safe.

I had QB Pro 2007. I was forced to upgrade my older computer and the 2007 version was no longer supported. I did do a back up and a company file before deleting old computer for sale. Now that my 2007 will not work I just had to purchase 2021 version. I cannot get either the back up or the company file to load. Is there someone at QB that can help me with this?

Thank you

I'm thinking about finally buying new software.  Can I import my 2009 data without jumping through a bunch of hoops?

@JustChilling

You may have 2 options:

1. Utilize the trial license of 2011, 2015 and maybe 2019 to convert your old file prior to opening it on QBD 2021.

2. Purchase a 3rd party upgrade service

Utilize the trial license of QBD 2021 to open the converted file. Then you may purchase a one time license of QBD 2021 Pro for 1 user worth $399 or Premier for 1 user worth $499.

I have an older version from 2003 that needs to be restored for a forensic accounting case.  How do I go about that one?

@Ralf Klenke

Are you still using QB Desktop or just need to restore the file to access the data you need?

Welcome to this thread, Ralf Klenke.

I can see the urgency of restoring your QuickBooks 2003. Let me help and guide you on how to get the file working again.

As mentioned by @qbteachmt on the first page of this thread, QuickBooks has a 3-year lifecycle. You’ll have to upgrade QuickBooks from 2003 to 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018, 2021, or 2022. Then rebuild the file in between.

Before performing the process, create a backup copy of the company file to prevent accidental loss. Also, make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements for a seamless process.

When you’re ready, restore your company file to the latest QuickBooks version. If you encounter any hurdles during the restoration process, I recommend contacting our Technical Support Team. They can install the file for you and ensure you can use it for your accounting case.

To reach them:

  1. In QuickBooks, press the Help icon at the top menu bar to select QuickBooks Desktop Help F1.
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the window and click the Contact us link.
  3. When the Contact Us screen opens, go to the Tell us more about your question section and enter the issue in the field box. For example, restore QuickBooks 2003.
  4. Click the Search menu and choose the support options: Call us to speak with an agent or Message Us for real-time support.

If you’re unable to see the options mentioned above, click here to get the contact information. For additional resources, the links below outline steps to troubleshoot installation errors: Fix QuickBooks Desktop install errors.

I have Quickbooks Contractor edition 2007 on a Windows 7 machine.

Whats the newest version of Quickbooks that I can directly upgrade to in ONE step?

March 31, 2023

Thanks for joining the thread, @Petersouth.

Good news! You can now upgrade your company file from an older version of QuickBooks Desktop to the latest one. With the newest version of the product, you don't have to upgrade from one version to another.

Just make sure you meet our system requirements for QuickBooks Desktop 2023 to ensure you're able to successfully restore your company files.

To check the latest available version is QBDT 2023. Please see our Plans & Pricing page for more details.

In case you encounter errors or are unable to restore data to the latest version, I'd suggest getting in touch with our phone support.
