Question

I have inventory of common stock item with parent item/manufacturer #. We then have multipe customers order this item but they assign their own unique part number. How do you use the parent inventory to sell the unique customer item number?

We're unable to use the common parent inventory to sell the unique customer item number since we can only assign one manufacturer number to every parent item in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), @Chillaxnwu. However, you can make each customer's unique number as sub-items as a workaround. Let's get into the details.

You can set up common stock items as parent items and create a new inventory item for each customer's unique part number. Then, link these unique items to the parent for inventory tracking.

Here's how to set up parent item:

  1. Go to the Lists menu, then select Item List.
  2. Select Item and then select New.
  3. Enter the details for the parent item, including its name, type, manufacturer number, and any other relevant information.
  4. Click OK to save the parent item.

To create a Sub-Item:

  1. Repeat the previous steps to create a new item.
  2. In the New Item window, enter the details for the sub-item, including its name, type, and any other relevant information.
  3. Tick the Subitem of checkbox.
  4. Select the parent item you want the sub-item to be under from the dropdown menu.
  5. Click OK to save the sub-item.
