Question

I'm getting an error message that says QuickBooks can't print checks when duplex printing is turned on, but my printer doesn't have duplex printing. Any ideas?

Thanks for reaching out to us, Suzie. I've come to provide you with some tips on how to fix printing issues in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

There could be several reasons we're having trouble printing from QBDT. Before we troubleshoot, ensure to:

  • Update your QBDT to the latest release.
  • Connect your computer to the printer.
  • Install the latest printer driver.
  • Check if there are no error messages or warning lights on your printer.

Once settled, let's isolate the issue first and try printing from other programs. We can try to print from any you prefer, as long as it's not QBDT. In these steps, we'll use a Notepad:

  1. Go to your computer's Start menu and browse to Notepad.
  2. Enter some text. Go to File and select Print.
  3. Choose the correct printer and select Print.

If you're able to print successfully, let's test your company file and QBDT installation. Here's how:

  • Try a standard form or report if you're using customized or memorized reports.
  • Try printing a single form if you were printing a batch. If successful, try printing in smaller batches.
  • Try printing the same type of form or report from one of the QuickBooks sample company files. If it works, try printing again after using resolve data damage on your company file to repair any data damage.

For other troubleshooting options, it's best to read this article: Fix printing issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

Moreover, QBDT includes numerous ready-made vendor reports that tell us where your company stands in terms of expenses and accounts payable. We can also customize them according to your specific business needs.

I also get this error. I have spent several hours attempting to find the cause including running the data rebuild. I've tested other forms, tried different printers. This error appears only when printing checks from Quickbooks. It has been an issue for me since Quickbooks 2016.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Enter a new check or view an old check (doesn't matter which)
  2. Go to File -> Print Check
  3. In the print dialog, in the Quickbooks section, choose "Voucher"

A new alert window opens with the message, "Printing checks is not allowed with two-sided duplex printing turned on. To print checks, turn off Two-Sided printing in the layout panel of the Print window."

Also, the content of the check in the preview window goes blank.

The printers I'm using do not have duplex capability, and duplex is not even an option in the Layout section of the print window. There is nothing to turn off, and there is no way to get past this error. If you dismiss the alert window by clicking OK, and hit the Print button, the alert window reappears. If you dismiss it again, another alert window is behind it and says, "Print - No pages from the document were selected to be printed."

I appreciate you for joining the thread, Mike.

Upon reading through you post and checking here on our system, I notice that the error you've mentioned is related to printing checks in QuickBooks Desktop for Mac. If you're using QBDT for Mac, these are the steps to get you through your current situation:

  1. Open up any Report under the Reports menu.
  2. Click the Print icon on the report to display the layout panel.
  3. In the "Presets" dropdown; choose this to a different preset. We have had luck using "Default setting" and "Last Used Setting".
  4. After changing this, close the report and re-try printing the check.

In case you're using QuickBooks Desktop for Windows, see this article to fix the printing-related issues: Fix printing issues in QuickBooks Desktop.

Furthermore, I've got this article to help you fix data issues inside QBDT: Verify and Rebuild Data.
