Question

I need to make all vehicles inactive, as this is a nightmare every year on my federal tax return, but there's no option to make a primary vehicle inactive, nor to delete

    Hey there, Alison. I understand how challenging to see your federal tax return affected by your active vehicles.

     

    You're correct that the primary vehicle cannot be inactivated because it's essential for accurate reporting and calculations. Inactivating this could lead to discrepancies in mileage records. 

     

    You can, however, consider editing it up or adjusting the existing one instead and changing the primary vehicle. Feel free to visit this article for more information: Set up vehicles and mileage tracking in QuickBooks Online to use with the mobile app.

    Nope, this doesn't answer my question nor does it solve my problem! Again, how do i remove or deactivate ALL vehicles from Quickbooks? I need to make my primary vehicle INACTIVE or delete it altogether - and there doesn't seem to be a way to do this OR a workaround, but there needs to be a solution. I don't want ANY vehicles listed in my Quickbooks at all. Please advise.

    Thanks for following up with the Community, alisonlessard.

     

    You won't be able to mark your current vehicle as inactive if it's set as the primary. You can assign a different vehicle as your primary first, then make the non-primary vehicle inactive.

     

    Here's how:
     

    1. Follow the steps in our Set up vehicles & mileage tracking article to add a new vehicle if you haven't yet.
    2. In the same article, follow the steps to assign your primary vehicle to the current non-primary one.
    3. In your left navigation bar, go to Expenses, then Mileage.
    4. Use the Add trip ▼ drop-down list.
    5. Go to Manage vehicles.
    6. Choose a vehicle you want to make inactive.
    7. Select Vehicle no longer in use. This moves it to your Inactive section in the Manage vehicles pane.

     

    If you need to reactivate a vehicle, follow the same steps for inactivating vehicles, then select Activate.
