Question

I would like to test QBD on another computer. Is this possible?

Hi,

I currently run my QBD 2020 Prem R16 on a Parallels VM under W11 pro on my Mac (a 2021 model with 16GB of memory and 2TB SSD). When starting QBD it takes over 1 minutes before the company desktop is displayed. I also think that backups (with verification) and shutdown takes too long on this rather fast Mac.

I would like to test run QBD on my new Dell W11 pro with 24GB of memory and 512GB SSD. Only W11 and MS Office 2021 is currently running on the Dell.

Can this be done, even for a limited time, and if yes, do I have to "deactivate" QBD on the Mac first. I hope, I won't have to deinstall first on the Mac.

I just would like to find out how it runs on the Dell, then make a decision, if I want to continue running it on the VM or on the Dell.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Gerd

Good morning, @gerdgoebel.

You can defiantly install and use QuickBooks on your new Dell computer to test it out without having to uninstall it from your Mac.

We can set up file sharing from your Mac and open that file right from your Dell. When sharing a folder, you give permission and set the accessibility level of users on the network to view, access, and modify files in the folder. In other words, you're giving yourself permission to access the file from the Dell computer.

Let me walk you through some steps to do this below. Please note: If you do not feel comfortable completing this task alone, you can always contact our Technical Support Team and let an agent do it for you.

First, you'll want to get QuickBooks installed on your Dell. Here's how:

  1. Download QuickBooks Desktop
  2. Open the file QuickBooks.exe.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions. Accept the software license agreement and then select Next.
  4. Enter your product and license numbers. Then click on Next.
  5. Tap on Express and then Next.
  6. Hit Install.
  7. When it finishes, select Open QuickBooks.

After you install it, QuickBooks will ask you to activate and update it. If you need help, here's how to activate QuickBooks Desktop.

Now that I've covered how you can install it on your Dell, here's how you can set up file sharing from your Mac:

  1. Locate and right-click the folder you want to share (from the Mac). Then select Properties.
  2. On the Sharing tab, click Share this folder. You can change the name of the shared folder by entering a new name in the Share Name field.
  3. Go to the Security tab or tap on Permissions to set permissions for each user who will access your folder.
  4. Hit Apply and OK.

From there, you'll need to locate the company file from your Dell. Here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks from the Applications folder.
  2. Close the first window QuickBooks Desktop Setup.
  3. Click on Open or Restore an Existing Company.

  4. Click on Open a company file in the Open or Restore Company window and click Next.

  5. Navigate to the file location.
  6. Click on the drop-down menu next to look in, select My Shared Data (S:), and click Open. Alternatively, if you know where your QuickBooks company files are already, you may navigate directly to the folder.
  7. Choose the desired company file to open.
  8. Tap the desired company file in the following window, and then click Next.
  9. Log in to your company file.

That should do it. Feel free to check out the help articles I've included below that cover more details about this process.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Take care!
