I have quickbooks 2020 desktop for mac. I had a issue with the laptop and most of my files got moved. There were recovered but now QB will not open. It gets where I put in my password in and then i get the spinning circle and it will not go any further. I have access to my last saved company file and when i click on it it still will not open. Can I open that company file with QB online and just move to it. I am unable to open the desktop version to create a specific file for the transition.

Thank you

Which MacOS do you run?

Thank you for turning to the Community about your concern, jrdaviswork.

I know how convenient it is for you to use QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) Mac smoothly. Let's go over some troubleshooting steps to get the program up and running.

First, you'll have to check your computer and make sure it meets the system requirements. This way, it's compatible with your setup and prevents unexpected issues when using it. See the following for more information:

  • At least macOS 10.14 (Mohave); ed by macOS 10.14 (Mojave).
  • Intel processor, Core 2 Duo or higher.
  • Multiuser Server: Intel Core 2 Duo or higher processor to run a server.
  • 2 GB RAM (4 GB RAM recommended).
  • 250 MB of available disk space.

Next, download the latest maintenance release to resolve any errors and apply critical fixes. Refer to this article for detailed instructions: Update QuickBooks for Mac. Proceed directly to the Manual update section.

After updating the program, rename the file or move it to a new location to rectify the issue. Here's how:

  1. Open the New Finder window and locate your company file.
  2. Go to the File menu and select Rename.
  3. Create a new name.
  4. Click the OK button.

Now, let's open your company file again. If the issue persists, move it to a new location.

  1. Go to the New Finder window and locate your file.
  2. From the Edit menu, choose Copy and paste the file to another folder.
  3. Hover to the Edit menu again and choose Paste.
  4. Open your QuickBooks and select Browse.
  5. Look for the new location of the file and tap Open.

Also, you can delete the file from the original location. Simply, go back to the New Finder window, and drag the file to the Trash icon.

Regarding your other concern, converting the QBDT Mac file to the online version requires users to log in as the admin in QBDT for Windows. Thus, make sure that you can open the company file (Mac) to complete the process. Here's an article that outlines the complete steps: Move from QuickBooks Desktop for Mac to QuickBooks Online
