Question

Is it possible to record a 2023 payment to a subcontractor in QuickBooks Online Payroll and issue a 1099 now? If so, how can this be done?

Yes, you can record a payment made in 2023 and generate a 1099. I'd be glad to share the steps with you, ShawnC.

First, you can record it as a check, bill payment, or an expense transaction. Just make sure to set the date to 2023 so it'll be included in the 1099 form.

Follow the steps in these articles for more details:

Next, follow the steps in this article on how to generate the 1099: Create And File 1099s With QuickBooks Online.

Take note that only vendors paid over $600 annually will receive a 1099 form. You can see which vendors fall under the threshold by following the steps in these articles:

Just to add more information - payments made using credit cards, debit cards, or third-party systems, such as PayPal are excluded from 1099 amounts in QuickBooks. Make sure to use the correct payment method in order to generate a 1099 for the contractor.
