Migrating from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online

Hello.

I am attempting to transition from QB desktop to QB online. When in QB desktop, I am getting the following error message: We couldn't export your company file. It might be on a network drive. Copy the company file to a local folder and try again.

We do have a cloud service, that controls where the company file goes. The instructions for troubleshooting recommended that move the file to a local drive. Is there any way around that?

I did retrieve a company backup file. And uploaded that to QB online, using the migration tool. However, our company data remains outside of QB online. It was uploaded successfully using the Amazon web services URL, and I've logged in as Admin multiple times, and it appears that it's been updated. But when I go back in QB online, I have the same default data (no data).

Can you help?

Let me help you migrate your company file into QuickBooks Online, AndrewTheAccountant.

The error message "We can't export your data. It may be on a network drive" occurs when your Desktop company is located on a drive other than your local c-drive or it's open in multi-user mode. The only way to resolve this is to copy your company file to your local c-drive. Since you're using a cloud service, it would be best to consult your local IT support to move or create a copy of your file to your local c-drive. Once done, follow the steps below to migrate the data to your Online account:

  1. In QuickBooks, locate your company data file.
  2. Close QuickBooks Desktop.
  3. Copy your company file to your local c-drive.
  4. Open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop from the new location.
  5. Go to the File menu.
  6. Select Switch to Single-user mode.
  7. Tap Company then tap Export Your Company File to QuickBooks Online.
