Closed QB DT, Backup worked. same issue this morning. Tried Help, Contact Us, never got code in email (

We appreciate you for posting here in the Community, @ormic1. Let me help you regarding the issue you're experiencing when backing up data in QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT).

 

You may receive errors when Intuit Data Protect (DP) didn't successfully back up the open files:

 

  • The QuickBooks company file is open via a mapped network drive while backing up occurs.
  • IBuEngHost.exe is running as the local user instead of the user SYSTEM.
  • Your Windows File System is not NTFS.

In resolving these errors, here are some troubleshooting steps you can do.

 

If the QuickBooks Desktop file is open via network drive, the first step is:

 

  1. Close the QuickBooks company file.
  2. In the system tray, click the IDP, and choose Open Intuit Data Protect.
  3. Select Back up now.

The second step is to verify if theIBuEngHost.exe running as the System user and not the local user.

 

  1. Click right on the Taskbar and choose Start Task Manager.
  2. Go to the IBuEngHost.exe and view the user listed in the User Name column. Click 'Show processes from all users' to see IbuEngHost.exe.
  3. To correct this, the QBIDPService.exe is running, and reboot your system.
  • To check if QBIDPService.exe is ongoing, from the Windows run line by typing in Services. msc, open the Services Console, and click Enter.
  • QBIDPService.exe should show with a Status of Started. Otherwise, restart your device.

I ran verify/rebuild, 5 errors corrected. Completed other troubleshooting steps, backup now working w/QB running.

 

The code was the one QB sends when using the help, contact us feature. Code was never received in email, tried 3 times. After troubleshooting on other issue, code was received.

Why can't code be sent to my phone instead of email? Phone is much quicker...

In QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), the only way you'll access the code sent by us is through your email. I understand that you find it more convenient if the code can be sent to your phone instead. In that case, I suggest sending a feature request to our product engineering team so they can take this into consideration. Here are the steps to follow:

 

  1. Go to Help menu.
  2. Choose Send Feedback Online in the choices.
  3. Select the Product Suggestion option and a pop-up window will appear.
  4. Enter your feedback suggestion.
  5. Click the Send Feedback button.

Are you getting an email with a list of files it couldn't backup, that says "The following files did not backup because they were open or not reachable:"?

 

If so, check the path to the files.  I was getting this error for months and I finally found the reason a few days ago.  Data Protect fails to backup files with a path longer than 256 characters.  Very stupid issue.  The entire path (C:\Users\Username\Documents\Folder Name\Sub Folder1\Sub Folder2\Filename.txt) has to be less than (maybe equal to or less than, I didn't check) 256 characters.

 

Also with one of the updates in the last 5 or so months Data Protect won't backup the company file for me if QB is open, so now I have to close it when I'm done for the day to get a complete backup.
