Hello, I am trying to open an old company file (Desktop Pro v2009) wihtin Desktop Pro 2017. I receive a message "The company file that you are trying to open was created with a newer version of Quickbooks. Please upgrade your copy of Quickbooks. I tried to backup in version 2009 and restore with v2017 with same error. I have the 2009 file residing on old pc (XP) and want to move to newer one. Any ideas?

Hello there, @ArcticFox60.

I can see that you want to restore your QuickBooks Desktop 2009 company file to a new PC and open it with a QuickBooks Desktop Pro 2017 version.

The message you received means the old company file was opened to a QuickBooks Desktop version newer than 2017 and you'll need to upgrade to a higher version to open this file. This happens even if you created your old company file from QuickBooks Desktop 2009 version and opened it using a higher version of QuickBooks Desktop, its version data will be overridden once it is saved using a higher version of QBDT.

Please refer to this article to learn more about upgrading your QuickBooks Desktop: Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise.

Moreover, you can also consider downloading a 30-day trial of QuickBooks Desktop to check out the latest version and give it a try.

If you need additional assistance in restoring your old company file to a newer version of QuickBooks Desktop, please feel free to leave a reply. I'd gladly assist you anytime.

I do not have any version newer than 2017 and nobody else has access to this file- so no, this is not the reason.

@ArcticFox60

You can install the trial version of QB Desktop 2011 and 2015 to upgrade your company file gradually. Contact @Fiat Lux - ASIA and they can help you to upgrade.

I see - that could work, but I have found a diff approach which works for me: I created a portable company file (in 2009) and was then able to import into 2017. I do not know the limitations of a portable file, but so far this solution works for me as only need to look up some info. Thank you.
