Potential Bug in Quickbooks Desktop Enterprise 2023

I have encountered what may be a bug. I have clients that use Quickbooks Desktop Enterprise 2023, and one has reported that when using the escape button to close the find menu (opened with Ctrl+F) it causes Quickbooks to crash. I have been able to reproduce this issue across multiple devices, and multiple company files. A fresh installation of Quickbooks still results in the same issue.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open the Find window with Ctril+F

2. Press Escape

Note: There did not appear to be any topics for issues like this, and a bug report section could not be found. If this needs to be moved to another location please advise on where to do so.

It isn't the kind of experience we want you to come across, D711.

Being able to close the Find window using the Esc button is a faster way to exit the page.

As of now, we have an ongoing investigation about the issue you encountered. As a workaround, you'll have to click the X button in the upper right corner to close the Find window.

I'd also suggest reaching out to our phone support team so you'll be added as one of the affected users. Here's how:

  1. Click the Help menu.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Hit Contact Us.
  4. Enter a brief description of your concerns. Click Continue.
  5. Select to chat with us or Have us call you.

Whenever you have concerns about managing your QuickBooks account, you can always visit our Help Articles page.

We appreciate your patience while we're working to resolve the issue the soonest.

I reached out to support with no resolution.  They told me that this is most likely a .net problem with microsoft.

I am having the same problem with several of my clients.  I spent 5 hours on the phone with Quickbooks with no resolution.  Quickbooks 2022 Enterprise I have no problem pressing the escape key after a search but in 2023 Enterprise, I get a crash every time on multiple Windows OS versions.

Same problem here.  My colleague uses 2022 and is not having this issue.

I am going to get carpal tunnel if I have to use the mouse to click on the "x" to close out windows hundreds of times each day.

We're having the same problem.  It's maddening.  I couldn't figure it out until I found this thread.  Quite annoying and such a waste of time to have QB crash numerous times times a day.  At least now I know how to avoid it.

Having the same issue.  IT updated QB to 2023 and every time "esc" button is pushed QB disappears (closes down).  Intuit needs a fix asap.

Hi there, Judy2018.

As mentioned by my colleague above, we've been receiving reports about errors when using the escape key to close the find window. Please know that this has been raised to our engineer for further investigation.

I suggest contacting our Customer Care team to get added to a list of affected users. This allows you to receive updates via email about this investigation.

Here's how to reach them:

  2. Go to Help, then select QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Select Contact Us.
  4. Give a brief description of your issue, then select Let's Talk, and then choose a way to connect. Phone support may be limited due to volume.

I've added this article to learn more about how to use different built-in shortcut keys in the program: Keyboard shortcuts in QuickBooks Desktop.

We have encountered this as well. The workaround for us as stated earlier was selecting the x instead of esc. We also noticed that moving too quickly between reports may crash it as well. 😞

D711 - I am having the same maddening problem and have wasted HOURS trying to fix it.

When I press Esc to close a window in 2023 QBDT (as I have been doing for many years), the program crashes.  After reading your post, I ran some tests and it appears that hitting the Esc key when the Advanced Find window is open is the culprit.   (Great diagnostic work, D711!)

If you work fast and furiously like I do, there are always many windows open and one of those windows is usually the Advanced Find window.  So, when hitting the Esc key to close various windows, the Advanced Find window is bound to be one of those windows, hence the crashing nearly every time I hit the Esc key.

Then, it takes forever for the program to re-open. Such a waste of time! I have used QBDT for 15+ years.  QuickBooks - PLEASE fix this problem and let customers resume using the ESC key to close windows without crashing the program.
