Program Startup Error - We're sorry, Quickbooks Desktop Point of Sale has run into a problem.

This past week, we began receiving this error message when trying to open Quickbooks Desktop POS 18.0 - "We're sorry, Quickbooks Desktop Point of Sale has run into a problem. Please restart the program".

I did some digging as a message popped up stating something to the effect "C://Program ..." (don't recall the message totally). I looked on my C:// drive and found a file labeled "C://program". I deleted it, and I was able top open up the POS program, and everything worked fine. However, after I restart windows, the same error pops up again, and I cannot open the POS software.

Prior to this problem I had updated Windows and all Microsoft programs that needed to be updated on this particular PC. Not sure if that's what caused this.

Anyway, I have struck out trying to find a solution to this issue. Anyone having the same issue? Anyone know what I could try to resolve this. This is being used by a small business. Fortunately, the business is closed due to the Covid 19 restrictions. I would like to get this resolved prior to the store reopening.

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to offer. - Rick

Thank you for the screenshot added, @jdrick.

This error can be resolve by opening your C: drive and deleting or renaming the "Program" file or folder found there.  Be careful not to touch "Program Files" though, those are critical. Or, you can just click on the Rename button on the prompt you received. Once completed, restart your computer and reopen QuickBooks.

If you're getting the same problem after doing these steps, I suggest reaching out to our Support Team so they can review this more closely and help resolve the error you're getting. For the support's contact information, check out this link and look for the details under the QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale section.

Get back to me if there's anything you need assistance with. I'm more than happy to help. Wishing you continued success!

Yesterday afternoon, I did the following:

  • Renamed the Program file that was being placed on my C: drive to Program.exe - I was able to open the POS software successfully.
  • Next, I disabled my Webroot software from starting up with Windows. I restarted my PC - I was still able to open POS software successfully.
  • Next, I deleted the Program.exe file from my C: drive, and restarted windows. The POS software opened successfully.
  • Finally, I reset the Webroot software to open when windows is restarted, and then rebooted my PC. Surprisingly, the POS software opened successfully, even with the Webroot software running after rebooting. There was no Program file placed on the C: drive, as it had in previous Window restarts.

So, not sure what resolved the issue of the Webroot Program file being placed on the C: drive, but its no longer happening, and out store's POS is now working again.

Hello, @jdrick.

I appreciate the steps you've performed when trying to resolve the problem you're getting. I'm here to help you so you'll be able to open QuickBooks and get back to business seamlessly.

As I've checked from our records, I haven't found any ongoing investigation about this error. To isolate the issue, we can start by installing QuickBooks using the clean install. This process help resolves issues while running QuickBooks.

  • Step 1. Uninstall QuickBooks Point of Sale
  • Step 2. Rename all Point of Sale folders
  • Step 3. Reinstall Point of Sale
  • Step 4. Restore your company file

Before performing the steps above, make sure that:

  • You’ve created a backup of your data file.
  • You have your QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale download file or your installation CD.
  • Your License and Product Numbers are available.
  • You can sign in as Windows Administrator before performing the next steps.
  • The computers you will be working on are available to be restarted.

Post again if you have any other questions. I'm a few clicks away to help. Happy weekend!

I am very reluctant to uninstall/reinstall, fearing loss of data, and having to reset all settings for the 5 pc in the store. Is there a program that I could download that can scan my setup?

Knowing the software ran fine prior to the store closing, and the only thing different since then was the updating of Windows 10, it seems as though its a Windows change that may have caused this?

I was able to take a photo of the message that popped up regarding the "C:// Program file.." I've attached for your review.

Thanks..

I looked at the properties of the C:/Program file that is placed on this pc everytime I try to open QB POS 18. It is a webroot file. I will see if I can determine why that suddenly is installing that when opening QB POS 18

I'm getting this issue. However, I'm not seeing anything with program.exe or anything about renaming any files. I just get the "We're sorry, QuickBooks Desktop Point of Sale has run into a problem. Please restart the program.". Can someone walk me through this please?

Hi there, Manny Mares.

Let's perform troubleshooting by installing and re-installing your QuickBooks POS to start afresh and help resolve the issue of your system not running.

Here's how:

  1. Uninstall your QuickBooks Point of Sale.
  2. Rename all Point of Sale folders.
  3. Reinstall the Point of Sale.
  4. Restore your company file.

However, kindly ensure the below before performing the steps, kindly ensure the following:

  • The backup data files were created.
  • You have the license and product number available.
  • You can restart the computers you'll be working on.
  • Before performing the following steps, you can log on as Windows Administrator.
  • You've got a download file or installation CD for QuickBooks Desktop Point of sale.

Furthermore, in locating your files in your QBO POS, I recommend seeking help from your Information Technology (IT) personnel as QuickBooks discontinued this program.
