I am new to QB Accountants Online. Currently using QB 2021. Am I able to take a clients backup file from a desktop version and restore it to my QB Accountants Online to work with?

I have another trick that can help you recover the data you need, Galanesm.

For now, restoring the backup file directly from QuickBooks Desktop to your QuickBooks Online Accountant (QBOA) is unavailable. As a workaround, you can move the file to QBO instead. But before that, make sure QuickBooks is up-to-date. And then, the company file is not too big to export. After that, start moving your company file. Check out the steps below. This will show  how if you have the Pro or Premier version:

  1. Sign in as an admin.
  2. Go to Company, then select Export Your Company File to QuickBooks Online.
  3. Select Get started.
  4. Sign in as an admin to your QuickBooks Online company.
  5. Select Choose online company, and choose the company you want to replace with your company file.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. If you track inventory in QuickBooks Desktop:
    • Select Yes to bring them over, then enter the as-of date.
      Note: Use the first day after your last tax filing period as your inventory start date.
    • Select No if you want to set up new items later in QuickBooks Online.
  8. Enter Agree in the text field, then select Replace.
  9. Select Yes, go ahead and replace the data, then select Replace.

To give you more details about the process, you can go through this article for reference: Move Your QuickBooks Desktop File To QuickBooks Online

Furthermore, with desktop and online versions, different terms are being used to describe the data. Learn what are these and how they move to QBO. I've got this article for more details: Learn How Features and Data Move from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

Don't hesitate to reach out to me if you have any further questions about converting your data. I'm always available to assist you and provide the best possible support.

@galanesm

Your QBO Accountant account is for QB Online users, not QB Desktop users. You should purchase QB Desktop 2024 Accountant before July 2024 to make sure you can still help your clients with QB Desktop 2023 and 2024 later.
