Quickbooks Crashes When Logging in as Admin

A little over a week ago when logging into our company file as Admin it prompted me to do a forced password change. It accepted the new password, and then the program shut down with no error messages. Now, whenever I attempt to login as Admin the program closes right before it loads the QB desktop.

I can log in as any other user without a problem. Our file is stored on a Windows 2016 Essentials Server. This is what I've tried:

  • Copying the company file to my local drive and opening it from there
  • Running the QB File Doctor on the file (No errors found)
  • Running the DB Manager scan on the server
  • Delete and reinstall Quickbooks Premiere 2020
  • Attempt to open file from different workstations (same result; crashes when logging in as Admin, works fine for every other user login)
  • Install QB Premiere 2020 onto a workstation with a freshly installed and updated copy of Windows 10
  • Launching Quickbooks as Windows Admin
  • Launching Quickbooks while holding CTRL
  • Logging in to Quickbooks while holding ALT
  • Restored backups of various ages, including backups from when I know I was able to log in as Admin. All files behave the same - a forced password change followed by a crash when logging in as Admin.

There are no error messages that pop up when Quickbooks closes after logging in as Admin, but this entry always appears in the Windows Application Events:

Faulting application name: qbw32.exe, version: 30.0.4013.3000, time stamp: 0x61437e00
Faulting module name: ucrtbase.dll, version: 10.0.19041.789, time stamp: 0x82dc99a2

The last few lines of the QBWin.log file after a crash are always this:

A week ago I called Intuit Support and spent over 2 hours on the phone with a tech trying to solve the problem. He eventually gave up and gave a me a case number and told me someone would be in touch within 48 hours to continue troubleshooting. No one has attempted to contact me.

I would be extremely appreciative if anyone is able to come up with a solution that allows me to regain the ability to log in as Admin.

Thank you!

You have a great job solving your problem. It seems that your file is corrupt but QB Too Hub fails to recognize it. How big is your file size?

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community, @FairbanksMike

I noticed that you mention whenever you call in to speak with customer support, they push for the online version. I want to believe that you may have reached out to the QuickBooks Online Support Team instead of QuickBooks Desktop Support Team. Just for reference, these are the steps to contact QuickBooks Desktop:

  1. Go to Help.
  2. Choose QuickBooks Desktop Help.
  3. Click on the Contact us link.
  4. Type in a keyword about your concern.
  5. Hit Submit.
  6. Click on the Start a Message button or select the Call-Back option.

For your reference, you can also check out these articles for further guidance:

That's it! Give this a try and please let me know how it goes in the comment section below. I'm always here should you have any follow-up questions and concerns. Take care and have a wonderful rest of the day.

I'm having the same issue. Is there any resolution to this problem?

March 31, 2022

Hi there, @DCOmar. I can provide some solutions to the errors you may have in QuickBooks Online.

Opening a sample company file can assist you in figuring out whether the issue is with your company file or with QuickBooks.

Here's how to open a sample file:

  1. From the No Company Open window, select Open a sample file.
  2. Select any sample file from the list.

If the sample file opens, your company file may be damaged, or the folder where the company file is saved may be damaged.

Proceed to solution #4 if the example file produces the same error message. Go to this link: Unrecoverable Error: General Troubleshooting Steps

You can create a new window administrator by following solution #6.

Here's how:

  1. Select the Start menu, then choose Settings > Accounts > Family & other users.
  2. Under Other Users, select Add someone else to this PC.
  3. Select I don't have this person's sign-in information, then Add a user without a Microsoft account.
  4. Enter the name of the new account, then select Finish.
  5. Recommended: Assign a password to the new account to ensure security.
  6. Select the newly created account, then choose Account Type.
  7. Choose Administrator, then OK.

Fill me in if you have additional questions or concerns about entering invoices or adding item discounts. The Community and I will be around to help. Take good care of it.

I am having the same problem with my QuickBooks Accountant version 2021 and I first noticed it last Friday. Everytime I try to log in, it automatically crashes.

@Richard_eynolds

Can you open the sample file?

July 9, 2022

I, too, am having this same issue. This started after QB changed how it handles the admin setup with a recent update (which I hate). I have 40+ company files in QB Enterprise, server based. It's happened today multiple times in 5 of my files, so no way that all 5 are corrupt - suddenly. This is an intuit issue that needs to be fixed! I have a new staff member starting on Monday and I need to set her up as a user in 5 different company files, and I can't get the files to open, or stay open long enough, to add her.

This all started with the most recent update, where QB changed this admin/intuit id setup. I believe it has something to do with QB now loading all the intuit id info when each file opens - Intuit is forcing this intuit id on us and our teams, which adds no value to me - it adds longer response times, and issues like this. Now, with this admin update, I can no longer have separate admin and day-to-day user login names because each has to be assigned a separate and unique email address to login. For 30+ years, I have setup a user named "admin" and a user named "Susan". I want them to be separate. I can no longer set them up separately on new QB company files, because intuit now requires the admin to have an intuit id, and that intuit id's email cannot be the same as another user. Ridiculous! and I have to believe this file shutdown issue is related - it is only happening in my older existing files where the admin user is setup separately as "admin".  Intuit, FIX THIS!

and yes, I was able to login to the sample file just fine. I don't need the sample file, I need to access the admin user on all 40+ of my company files!

I found a solution that worked! Doing both of these steps worked for me to get logged into each of several files as admin where I was not able to do so before trying this.

Link here:

it was on qbo support - this site will not allow me to post the link.

Text copied here:

Step 1

Suppress the Desktop While Starting QuickBooks

Press and hold the Ctrl key.
Double click your QuickBooks program icon.
Hold the Ctrl key until QuickBooks starts and displays the No Company Open window.

Step 2

Suppress the Desktop While Opening a Company File

Click your company data file in the No Company Open Window.
Press and hold the Alt key.
Click the Open button.
Hold the Alt key until the log in window appears.
Release the Alt key.
Enter your user name and password. (<< this is where I logged in as "admin")
Press and hold the Alt key.
Click OK and hold the Alt key until your file is completely open. QuickBooks will display a blank desktop.

Holding the "ALT" key when logging in will prevent any window that was previously opened (previous session) - from re-opening.  It fixed my issue - Thank you!

Nothing is helping - Go through all the steps and it persists! QUICKBOOKS this needs to be fixed!

@Richard_eynolds

Are you unable to run the QB Desktop program on your machine at all? Is there an older QB Desktop version on your machine?
