Quickbooks Desktop 2020 on Windows 10 laptop freezes up constantly - tried all the topics I found - still freezes up

Windows 10 Computer with Quickbooks PRO Desktop 2020 - not using payroll or other add ons.

Tried every tip I found on forum and online - still only works for a few minutes and then freezes up. Hard to do business with this happening.

I went to task manager and to details tab and made sure QB processes were removed from the details tab. Then start QB as administrator. didn't work. after startup before opening QB, went to Task Manager ->Details tab.

Showed QBFC Monitor Service and QBIDP Service.exe as Running and Not Allowed

and QBIDPService.exe running and Disabled . Ended those before opening QB.

Went to programs and looked for the QBWUSER.INI file and it is enabled.

updates is disabled - that is probably because it is no longer supported.

I ran verify data, no errors found, ran QB file doctor -> said repairing.

I don't know if it repaired itself when it is not supported.

And I checked that it is not blocked by Norton.

Ran an update on Quickbooks but it was after service ended.

I am nearing retirement within a year and do not want to switch to QB online at this point.

I just want my QB desktop to work

Any suggestions on what else I might try? I am at the end of my rope on this.

Thank you for any suggestions you might have.

Hello there, @Martha36.

Let me acknowledge all the effort you’ve exerted in rectifying your concerns about QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) freezing issues.

I can see that you’re using a discontinued version of the application. Thus, receiving the latest critical security patches and updates won’t be available. You may find upgrading to a newer version. Here’s an article you can check for complete guidelines: Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop Pro, Premier, or Enterprise.

On the other hand, I have steps you can take to get around this matter. That said, we can perform troubleshooting steps that

Here’s how:

  1. Close your QuickBooks account.
  2. Download the most recent version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub, then save the file somewhere you can easily spot it.
  3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  4. Pay heed to the onscreen prompts to install, then agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the installation completes, click the icon on the Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

Then, perform the steps below to repair your QuickBooks:

  1. In the QuickBooks Tools Hub, select Program Problems.
  2. Click Quick Fix My Program.
  3. Try to open your files.

Moreover, you can try other fixes outlined in this article: Fix issues when QuickBooks has stopped working.

If you still encounter the same issue, I recommend consulting with your IT Professional to see your check your computer and application setup.

I’ll be around the corner to lay a hand for help if you have more concerns about QuickBooks. Stay safe!

I did all you suggested and it didn't stop the freezing up of QB. My file size is 247500K

It was compacted in 2017 with help from QB support. I have had this problem since support for QB 2020 Pro ended, not before that.

It worries me that Quickbooks is going to just not open at some point. I am backing up every day but if I don't have Quickbooks, I don't know what good a back up would be.

Do you have any other suggestions? I do not want to upgrade because I don't use any add ons and I am nearing retirement within a year.

If I buy a new computer or upgrade my computer to Win 11, would quickbooks work on a Windows 11 computer. I don't have add ons.

Thank you! Martha

If I install it on a new computer, would I be able to download the updates up that were available up until the end of service date?

Installing discontinued QuickBooks products to a new computer won’t download updates, Martha. Allow me to clarify things out and help resolve this.

I recognize the inconvenience you’ve experienced, especially when trying various troubleshooting steps without success.

When QuickBooks Desktop is discontinued, you’ll no longer receive the latest critical security patches and updates regardless of the device you’re using. Thus, installing it on a new computer won’t download updates and guarantees stability.

Since you don’t want to upgrade, I recommend contacting our support team for further assistance. Our specialized technicians can provide solutions and help prevent your system from freezing. Please know that it may require support fees once connected.

Once resolved, you can generate reports to see and review your documents and get ready for the next set of entries.
