QuickBooks Desktop for macOS Sonoma

Apple released its first developer beta on June 5, 2023, and macOS Sonoma entered public beta on July 11, 2023.  With the macOS customer base Intuit has I am appalled they let this slip thru the cracks and failed their customers.  The QuickBooks development team should have tested their software prior to the public release of macOS Sonoma.  While in the Army, if I had pushed our software out to 3,000 to 4,000 computers before testing it with the latest RC prior to the public release of any OS I would have been relieved of duty.

I've been a QuickBooks user for years in both Windows, OS X, and macOS and their pricing plans continue to take advantage of the customer.  No more upgrades, pay fill price each year.  The online version is so poorly written it should be given away for free.  I support dozens of companies running macOS.  Monday I will begin looking for an alternative to this software.

Which QB Desktop year version do you have? They have released the patch for QB Desktop 2021-2023 to support Sonoma this week. As I know, there is no outstanding issue.

I was running QB 2019 Desktop for the Mac under Ventura and upgraded to Sonoma.  That's when thing went south. I have seen customer responses who upgraded to QB 2023 for the Mac in an attempt to solve the problem.  All the strings I saw on the Community wall indicated they still had the same issue even with QB 2023 under Sonoma.

Can you share the post about it?

QB Desktop 2019 has outdated since June 2022. I believe they won't release any patch for QBD 2019 to support Sonoma. You can install QBD 2021 without a license to open your company file up to 15 times "opening" But you will need a workaround to reset the counter back to 15 times again for good. Contact me in private for details.

This is an OLD story with Intuit whenever there's a MacOS update. Mac Desktop for Quickbooks has always been treated like the redheaded step-child by Intuit. I learned MANY years ago, if a functioning copy of QB is important to you, DON'T update to the latest MacOS until you can verify that Intuit has given the green light. Is this ideal/acceptable? Of course not, but it's the way it has been for at least 20+ years.

I would really like to know what you find as an alternative, I will be moving away to0, and NOT to the crappy, childish-like version online.

Is there a patch for QuickBooks 2020 to work on Sonoma?

November 17, 2023

Sonoma just updated again last night (11/16/23) I was able to open and use Quickbooks Desktop 2019 on my Mac again for the first time since the original Sonoma update happened! Thrilled as I almost purchased the 2024 QB Desktop version. The only problem I see so far is I am unable to backup either of the two companies I am running in QB's. If anyone has found a way to create a backup I'd appreciate the advice!

Hi LAM4321,

Thank you for sharing the great news that you're able to open QuickBooks Mac after the update. We expect that other users will also be able to open their company files.

Regarding the issue of not being able to back up your company files, there is an ongoing investigation for it. While waiting for updates from our engineers, I encourage you to contact our QuickBooks Mac team today and have your account added to INV-74567. The team can do this in a more secure environment. They are available on weekdays from 6 AM to 6 PM PT.

  1. Follow this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/help/en-us/contact-us
  2. Choose QuickBooks for Mac and click Continue.
  3. Enter the summary of the issue: cannot back up QB Mac 2023 company files (INV-74567), and click Continue.
  4. Choose Chat or Callback.

Don't hesitate to reach out if you have more questions about backing up your company files. Take care and have a good one.

I was running QB Mac 2016 on Mojave.  I have upgraded to Sonoma and as expected, QB 2016 does not run.  I do not want to run a subscription model,  Is there a way to install & run a standalone version of QB 2021 or 2023?  Intuit support simply wants to sell me a subscription to QB Mac 2024 (that has only been available for 1 month!!).

If you find an alternative that is desktop only, no online rip off, please let us all know.

@desktoponly

Any specific concern? You can still run QBD 2019 and 2020 on Sonoma 14.1.1

Or do you need another option to replace your QBD 2019/2020?

December 4, 2023

I can run it now, but fear every Sonoma update may cause another freeze.  I wouldn't mind upgrading to Mac QBD 2021 if that will be better supported, but I'm not seeing any definitive answer or information about both issues.

Did you find a good alternative? I have two companies and QB online is not only awful, but you have to pay for two subscriptions. The desktop let me have two companies files without extra cost.

Which QB Desktop for Mac year version do you have?

January 31, 2024

I have QB 2019 for Mac.I would like to update , but my small business can not afford a monthly subscription. I don’t use payroll.

Hi there,

Will QBD for Mac 2020 work on OS Sonoma? I know I cannot buy a newer version without a subscription, which really stinks as I own and operate a pet sitting business by myself! I've been using QB for Mac since 2010 so this change really sucks. I'm currently running Monterey but would like to upgrade my OS. I appreciate all the information I've read in this thread.

Thank you!

I appreciate you joining the thread and detailing your concern about the compatibility of QuickBooks Desktop for macOS Sonoma. I'll share information relating to this matter.

QuickBooks Desktop 2020 is no longer supported, which could result in certain features becoming dysfunctional due to updates in the computer's operating system.

Should you encounter any complications, there are several options to consider. One option is to continue using QuickBooks Desktop 2020 on the current operating system that supports it. Alternatively, you might explore upgrading to a more recent version of QuickBooks that is officially compatible with the latest operating system updates.

I'm adding this article you can use in the future: Release Notes for QuickBooks Desktop for Mac 2020.

If you have any further questions or concerns, post them here in the forum. We're here to assist you in any possible way. Have a great day!

Thank you for your reply. What is the last non subscription version of the Desktop for Mac?

November 11, 2024

Hear! Hear! Let me know if you find another accounting program. I'm tired of being gouged, as well. So far, I haven't found another application that is as comprehensive.

I completely agree about the online version. Only good and reliable for the meager tasks of bookkeeping. And forget about being able to import back into Mac desktop!
