In QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), as you click the Close company option, this will normally close the window or the company you're currently in so you can switch to the other company. 

Since you've mentioned that your QBDT will close entirely as you select the Close company option, it's best to check if you have the latest version of your QBDT. This way, you'll get the latest security patches and bug fixes. 

If the issues persist, I recommend using a QBDT Tool Hub since this helps fix problems and errors that you currently have. Make sure to close QBDT for you to use the tool hub.

Here's how: 

1. Close QuickBooks.
2. Download the most recent version of the QuickBooks Tool Hub which is 1.6.0.3. 
3. Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
5. Once you're done installing, double-click the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub. 
6. Run the Quick Fix my file to fix common data issues.
