Hi, we are thinking of moving to QuickBooks Online and when transferring the backup file to QuickBooks Online from Desktop, can you only transfer for example the past two years of data to Online or can you only transfer everything since we started using Desktop. Thanks

Hello there, @exclusive55 .

Let me share information about what you can and can't move to QuickBooks Online from QuickBooks Desktop.

Yes, you can move data from the time you started using QuickBooks Desktop. Most of your data can be moved. There are limitations for some data, but don't worry. You can manually enter them into QuickBooks Online.

Here are some examples of features that can be moved:

  • Budgets
  • Inventory
  • Multi-Currency
  • Online Banking
  • Payroll
  • QuickBooks Payments
  • Sales Tax

You can read this article to learn more about the features, items, lists, preferences, reports, and transactions: Learn how features and data move from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

You can run Condense Data utility to removed old data. You will convert the condensed file to QB Online. You should keep your old company file and you can use the trial version to access your historical data for good if required.
