We are a wholesale distribution company with inventory and have been using QuickBooks Enterprise Desktop forever. Recently, we started to migrate over to QuickBooks Online and learned that there is not a sales order function. Has this been addressed and can we now add sales orders like we normally would in the desktop version

You should stay with QB Desktop. If you prefer switching to QBO, consider having an inventory management app with the sales order feature to sync with QBO.

Let me share more details on using the sales order on QBO.

I recognize the importance of having access to the sales order function in your account. However, this feature is only available for QuickBooks Online Plus and Advanced subscribers. If you have one of these subscriptions, you can create a sales order by following these steps:

  1. Click the +New button.
  2. Under Customers, select Sales Order.
  3. Provide the necessary information.
  4. Hit Save.

You can check this article to learn more about managing your sales orders.

Additionally, I'm sharing this link to help you connect your ecommerce channel to QBO.

When I try to use the Sales Order option, I get this message..."You’re using the older layout for QuickBooks invoices that is not compatible with the current version of sales orders. Please try again after switching to the newer version of invoices"  How do I switch to a newer version?

Yes, QBO now has sales orders. Click SALES on the left side menu and you will see SALES ORDERS.

I don't know why I too so long but I repeatedly asked for sales orders and now er have it!

As per my original post, will this new sales order capability allow for an estimate to be turned into a sales order which could be turned into an invoice and then receive payment? I need to function just like it does with QuickBooks desktop version

I appreciate you getting back to this thread and providing insights on the new sales order feature in QuickBooks Online (QBO), Kferraro. Your insightful suggestion highlights an important aspect of tracking customer transactions. I encourage you to submit this valuable idea to our product engineers for consideration in future updates.

We recognize the relevance of having these functionalities available in QBO. Currently, you can only convert an estimate into an invoice and turn a sales order into the latter item.

Our engineers continuously seek to fulfill our customer's needs, and your input is vital in deciding which features will be incorporated in upcoming updates. To send your feedback, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your QuickBooks Online account.
  2. Go to the Gear icon in the upper right and choose Feedback under Profile.
  3. Type in your recommendation in the Share your feedback field.
  4. Click Next to submit.

Furthermore, when your customers pay their invoices, make sure to record those payments to keep your income accounts balanced.
